Consistently good walleye bite
It was another even split between plastics pulled at speed and minnows on light jigs fished vertically. Often the choice was decided by what the anglers in the boat preferred. Both were equally effective for numbers and size.
The surprise for me this week is that most walleyes have remained relatively shallow this summer. Typically, by this time of year we are spending most of our time in water deeper than 30 ft. We did see a few walleyes caught at 30 this week, but most were still caught between 15 – 25 ft. Both main lake sand and rock produced.
For the week, we caught and released 61 walleyes over 27 in., including 17 – 28s, 1 – 29, and 1 – 30. Even with a few flat calm afternoons, walleye volume remained consistently strong. Guide sheets averaged 40 walleyes over 18 in. per boat per day.
Big pike were hit and miss. There were a few good days of action and there were some quiet ones. For the week, we caught and released 11 pike over 37 in., including 1 – 38, 1 – 39, and 1 – 41.
