The change of seasons begins

Some wind and weather this week brought in some of the first cool weather days of Summer.  We woke up to mornings in the 40s and we had a fire in the woodstove in the main lodge for the first time in awhile.  The weather changes moved the fish around and there were a few days of heavy wind that prevented us from spending much time on the main lake.

Both volume and size were down slightly from previous weeks.  The walleyes did move a little bit deeper.  We still found some in 15 – 25, but there were more fish caught between 25 and 30 ft. deep.  Gulp at speed and minnows on light jigs vertical were both productive.  We did have some guides split the difference and long line minnows on quarters to cover water for reluctant biters.

For the week we caught and released 30 walleyes over 27 in., including 5 – 28s, 2 – 29s, and 1 – 30.  Guide sheets averaged 35 walleyes over 18 in. per boat per day.

We are just seeing the first signs of the weed beds beginning to break up.  Heavy winds and big waves this week accelerated the process.  The result was a good pike bite, especially for big ones.  For the week, we caught and released 17 pike over 37 in., including 5 – 38s, 3 – 39s, 1 – 40, and 5 – 41s.  A few were caught while walleye fishing, but most hit big spoons coming out of weeds near deeper water.
