A hint of Fall
We had several rounds of thunderstorms, showers, and wind this past week. The unusual hot spell was replaced by cool winds and chilly nights. The abrupt weather changes led to some tough bites, but there were still some nice big fish caught.
The walleyes moved a little deeper on the main lake. Key depths were around 25 – 30 ft. Gulp at speed was hit and miss, but so were finesse fishing techniques for neutral to negative fish. Results depended greatly on timing and location, and it often felt like there was little rhyme or reason. Hot spots varied by day and by region. In general, main lake sand was equally productive as main lake rock.
For the week, we caught and released 37 walleyes over 27 in., including 6 – 28s, 1 – 29, and 1 – 30. Volume was up and down, but the average number of walleyes over 18 in. per boat was around 30.
The results for big pike were also a bit quieter than what we typically expect for this time of year. There were a few big ones caught from main lake weed beds, but most guides slinging for pike reported much more action than big fish. For the week, we caught and released 5 over 37 in., including 2 – 38s and 2 – 40s.
It feels like the immediate risk of forest fires in our area has been reduced, but the fire ban remains in place for the region.
