I don’t think that I have had to change the opening paragraph of the fishing report since the first week of June. Once again, it was a very unsettled weather week with another major storm. This week’s blast dumped almost 3 in. of rain in one night and was accompanied with high winds and was followed by a blustery Northwest wind. The last few days have been a bit more consistent, but I think it may take a while to establish a more ‘typical’ Spring pattern with all of the ups and downs we’ve had

The cabbage weeds are just about fully grown, but the weather has shut down the weed bite for now. There were a few smaller fish on the deep side of the weeds the last day or two, but there was no consistent shallow water bite. Most of the bigger fish are being caught from early summer spots, primarily in water deeper than 20 ft. We did have a bit more success on bouncers and spinners this week, but ¼ – 3/8 oz. jigs with minnows still produced the majority of the bite.

For the week, volume was variable, but averaged 45 walleyes over 18 in. per boat, with the highest daily total at 104. For big fish, there were 22 walleyes over 27., including 5 – 28s, and 3 – 29s.

It was another great bass week, with 73 over 17 in., including 16 – 18s, 2 – 19s, and 1 – 20. The top water bite died with the weather, but small rattl-traps, jigs and plastics, and small spinner baits continued to produce well.

Very little effort was put towards pike, but there was 1 – 37, 1 – 38, and 2 – 39s caught while walleye fishing

The most notable observation to date for 2007 is the lack of a consistent shallow water bite for big walleyes. Even in May, most bigger, fish were caught deeper. I was in the boat today reminiscing with a long term guest. We were remembering big fish that we had put in the boat this week in the past and most were pulled out of relatively shallow water, 8-14 ft. in front of the weeds. We could still see a significant shallow water bite, but if the weather doesn’t become more stable in the next few weeks, there is a very good chance that we will just transition directly into a deep water summer bite for big walleyes.
